Ceramic coatings are sold with a lot of claims. What they reliably do is make paint hydrophobic and chemically resistant for years, which changes maintenance rather than making paint invulnerable.
What they do
A semi-permanent layer bonded to the clear coat that repels water and contamination, resists chemical etching, and makes washing dramatically easier. Good ones last several years.
In Middle Tennessee that matters for pollen, tree sap, bug residue and bird droppings, all of which etch unprotected paint quickly in summer heat.
What they do not do
They do not prevent scratches, swirl marks or rock chips. They add hardness at a microscopic scale, not armour, and a poor wash technique will still swirl a coated car.
They also do not eliminate washing — they make it easier and less frequent, not unnecessary.

Preparation is the whole job
A coating locks in whatever is underneath. Applying it over swirled or contaminated paint seals the defects in for years.
That is why a proper coating job is mostly correction, and why a cheap coating price usually means the correction was skipped.
Paint protection film instead
For rock chips, film is the answer rather than a coating. It is a thick urethane layer applied to impact areas — bonnet, bumper, mirrors — and it physically absorbs impact.
The two are complementary: film on impact areas, coating over everything.
