A car parked outside in Middle Tennessee takes ultraviolet, heat, a heavy pollen season and tree sap. Each does something different to the finish, and heat accelerates all of them.
Ultraviolet and heat
Ultraviolet degrades clear coat over years, and once it fails it cannot be polished back — the paint needs respraying. Heat accelerates every chemical process on the surface.
Red and dark colours show it soonest. Protection and shade are the only meaningful defences.
Bird droppings and sap
Both are acidic and both etch clear coat, and on a hot Nashville bonnet that happens within hours rather than days.
Remove them immediately with a detailer spray and a soft cloth rather than rubbing dry, which scratches.

Pollen
Nashville pollen is abrasive as well as unsightly. Wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth drags those particles across the clear coat and is a common source of fine scratching in spring.
Rinse first, always, and use a detailer spray as lubrication if a full wash is not practical.
What protection buys
A sealant or ceramic coating does not stop etching indefinitely, but it slows it and gives you time to remove contamination before it reaches the paint.
