The full detail is the sensible first job on any vehicle we have not worked on before. It resets the car — decontaminated paint outside, every surface cleaned inside — and gives an honest baseline for whether correction or coating is worth doing afterwards.
The wash is two-bucket with grit guards, and wheels and arches are done first with separate tools. Washing wheels last, or with the same mitt, is how brake dust ends up dragged across the paint.
Decontamination is chemical then mechanical: an iron remover for embedded brake dust, then clay for the bonded contamination you can feel but not see. Paint that still feels gritty after a wash has not been decontaminated, and anything applied over it is sitting on top of dirt.
Inside, carpets and cloth seats are shampooed and hot-water extracted rather than sprayed and wiped. Extraction pulls the soil out; wiping moves it around and leaves the car damp.
A full detail on an average saloon takes most of a day. Anyone quoting ninety minutes for the same description is describing a wash.
